2010 Year in Review:
The DECA Global Adventure
We started the year off in England teaching a week of workshops at the Brewery Arts Center in Kendal, UK.
From there, we went to Bath, UK to work with the Urban Youth Theatre at The Egg/Theatre Royal on re-mixing Hamlet into hip-hop for the Shakespeare for Supper festival where we also performed a new version of The City Breathing
After two weeks developing “The Cage” and teaching at Hype Dance in Sheffield, Deca took the Eurostarr to Paris where we checked out our feature in sneaker-head magazine “Shoes-Up”
We did a photo shoot at The Eifel Tower and then spent three weeks teaching and performing in Aurillac and Limoges, France.
Returning to the UK, Deca created a new piece for the B Supreme Crew and performed at the Southbank Center in London for the B Supreme Festival. While we were in London, we also filmed a spot for the famous BBC TV show, Blue Peter
After a short vacation, Deca reunited in NYC and performed our repertory show at the Red Hook Festival in Brooklyn as well as at numerous NYC Public schools. While we were developing our new piece, When the Sky Breaks we rocked the stage of St Marks Church for FuseNYC’s A Soul Exchange and Forward Motion Theatre’s Re:Vision in Long Island City. Then we were off to perform at Jacob’s Pillow before our run at Joyce SoHo, which was totally sold out even after we added an extra performance.
In the fall, Jenn was a visiting artist at Mount Holyoke College, Plymouth State University and at the Berkshire Pulse. Sylvia spent 3 months teaching in Cyprus, Taeko modeled for Dance Spirit Magazine, Nadia performed for the BBC Proms back in London, and Lu had knee surgery.
In November, the crew got together to help raise money for Joyce SoHo at their annual benefit auction and then flew out to San Francisco for the 12th annual SF Hip-Hop Dance Festival at the Palace of Fine Arts.
In between all of that, we taught in the NYC public schools, set pieces at the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts and Southeastern Missouri State University, drank a lot of coffee, made a lot of friends, and had a lot of laughs….
Yep—2010 was a busy year for the DECA Crew, and we have even more planned for 2011…
