It’s a hip hop takeover at the Apollo as dancers from around the globe are on the stage, under the marquee, throughout the building during a jam-packed weekend of performances, family workshops and discussions that include DJ’s spinning, live graffiti art, film clips and special tributes to hip hop dance icons.
The Apollo Theater launches its first global festival in June 2013 with the North American premiere of Breakin’ Convention –a hip-hop dance theater festival produced annually by UK based, Sadler’s Wells. Hip-Hop, which began as a distinctly American art form, in Bronx, NY, has extended its roots around the globe. This spring, the Apollo Theater and Sadler’s Wells London celebrate the global hip-hop dance theater culture with this four-day festival.

Featuring performances by Jane Sekonya (South Africa/UK), Decadance (NY/US), Next Level Squad (NY/US), the duo Compagnie Sébastien Ramirez (German/France), ensemble Boy Blue Entertainment (UK) , In Da Clutch Crew (NJ/US), The Wondertwins (MA/US) soloists Frank Ejara (Brazil) and and the world’s best b-boys from Korea, Project Soul Collective.

In March, Dance Under the Influence continues with ABT Studio Company giving audiences a chance to see stars of the future perform works by great choreographers of our time; the dynamic all-female, hip hop Decadence Theatre presents a an excerpt from "When the Sky Breaks" while post modernist David Neumann delivers works of poignancy and dry wit, and great theater artist and puppeteer Basil Twist creates an engrossing world with his favorite puppet characters.

- 4 Countries, over 30 cities, over 50 shows…2012 was an amazing year!
Our first gig of 2012 was the Matrix Imagination Event in New Orleans. We had a blast on stage and off!

“On Friday evening the company returned to the Joyce SoHo with “4,” the first section of an evening-length work set to Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons.” In the piece — devoted to the stormy “Summer” section — Megan Alfonso and Adaku Utah share the stage, demonstrating how movement can switch from crisp to balmy at a moment’s notice.
